DESCRIPTION:Join local luthier Alex Edney for an exploration of the intersection between utility and artistry. Drawing parallels to Rufus Porter’s philosophy of elevating the practical through innovation\, Edney will discuss his process for crafting custom guitars near the White Mountain National Forest. Discover how he harvests and utilizes local\, indigenous tree species to create instruments that are not only acoustically resonant but visually stunning—embodying the timeless\, shared principle of making the useful things around us beautiful. \nParticipants will learn fundamental bracing techniques. Alex will demonstrate on a dreadnougt-style guitar face. The dreadnought is a large-bodied acoustic guitar know for rich tone and powerful projections. \nPresenter Biography \nLuthier Alex Edney has been captivated by the artistic and physical principles of guitar acoustics for most of his life. This passion for luthiery began during his teenage years while performing basic instrument repairs at a neighborhood music shop. After graduating high school\, Edney built his inaugural flattop guitar under the mentorship provided by the Vermont Instruments School of Luthiery. \nIn 2007\, he earned formal credentials in instrument repair as a graduate of Atlanta Guitar Works. Following a career based in the greater Boston region that lasted until 2021\, Edney moved his base of operations to a historic sawmill site located in western Maine. Currently\, he practices his craft as a local luthier near the White Mountain National Forest\, where he draws creative inspiration and harvests materials directly from the indigenous tree species that form the foundation of his handcrafted instruments. \n  \nREGISTER NOW

Join Renee Norwood\, a dear friend of the museum\, for a hands-on experience in designing your own custom garden stakes. During this session\, you will work with pre-fired ceramic pieces\, adding your personal artistic flair through the art of glazing. It’s a perfect opportunity to craft a whimsical\, one-of-a-kind accent for your garden. Your finished masterpieces will be fired and ready for collection approximately seven to 10 days after the workshop. \nPresenter Biography \nAfter a successful 21-year career in sales management and raising five flourishing children\, Renee Norwood stepped into her next chapter. She took her first pottery class in May 2025 and hasn’t looked back since. She thrives on the creative freedom ceramics provides and loves sharing her passion for the medium with others. \nWhen she isn’t at the wheel\, Renee enjoys spending time with her seven grandchildren and exploring the world with her husband. DESCRIPTION:Discover the timeless technique of English Paper Piecing\, a traditional quilting method that uses paper templates to stabilize fabric shapes before stitching them together. In this workshop\, you will learn the basics\, from preparing your fabric and templates to the essential whip-stitch technique used to join your pieces into precise\, intricate geometric patterns. Whether you are a beginner looking to start a new quilting project or an experienced maker interested in the meditative pace of hand-piecing\, this class will provide the skills and confidence to create beautiful\, . All supplies will be provided. \nFee:  $10 for members of the Rufus Porter Museum; $15 for non-members. Supplies and light snacks will be provided \nPresenter Biography \nDianne lived in three other communities in Maine before moving to Bridgton in 2011. Her vocational life was for 22 years as an elementary school librarian in Falmouth\, Maine. Her avocational life was spent as a handicrafter; especially as a seamstress\, costumer\, knitter\, miniaturist\, sometime mural painter\, quilter and a dabbler in water colors. Having lived in a lovely 1763 property in New Gloucester\, ME\, she has developed a real desire to help to preserve and celebrate the homes\, lives and contributions of our ancestors. \n  \nREGISTER NOW

DESCRIPTION:The Rufus Porter Museum is deeply honored to host a special evening with world-renowned author and museum member\, Lois Lowry. In this intimate retrospective\, Ms. Lowry will reflect on a prolific career spanning over fifty years of writing. \nThis presentation offers a rare opportunity for the local community to engage with the author of modern classics like “The Giver” and “Number the Stars.” Ms. Lowry will discuss her writing process and her dedication to empowering young readers to navigate the complexities of human nature. \nA central focus of the evening will be a look at her upcoming book\, “Building 903\,” scheduled for release in late September. Ms. Lowry will share insights into this newest endeavor\, which she anticipates will be her final published work. \nAttendees are invited to join us for a presentation that blends personal history with literary mastery\, including a presentation of images and stories from her life’s work. \nAbout the Presenter \nLois Lowry is an acclaimed American writer known for her versatility and her ability to tackle challenging subject matter for children and young adults. Born in Honolulu\, Hawaii\, in 1937\, her early life was shaped by a childhood spent in the islands and later in Tokyo. Over half a century\, she has authored more than 50 books\, earning two Newbery Medals and a permanent place in the hearts of readers and educators worldwide.
