SUMMARY:Ingenuity Speaker Series - Caroline Barnard & the Gold Rush
DESCRIPTION:Ron Kley is a geologist\, historian\, and former Maine State Museum staffer who served for two decades as the head of the Research and Collections Division\, starting in 1968. During his tenure\, he helped build the state’s geological collections and was present during the famous 1972 “Big Find” of gem tourmaline at the Dunton Mine in Newry. A resident of East Winthrop since 1968\, his career has included teaching geology at various universities and extensive lecturing across the U.S. and internationally. His current historical research focuses on tracing the Mainers who joined the California Gold Rush. \nPresentation Description \nDrawing upon a decade of research\, Kley will share the story of the 53-member Kennebec Trading and Mining Company’s 167-day voyage around Cape Horn aboard the ship Obed Mitchell. The presentation highlights the local connection to Caroline Barnard\, a young ‘rushette’ from the Bridgton area who was the only member known to have kept a diary of the journey. Discover how this era of rapid expansion fueled the ingenuity of Rufus Porter\, who promoted his ambitious ‘Aerial Locomotive’ airship to transport gold rush prospectors.

Drawing parallels to Rufus Porter’s philosophy of elevating the practical through innovation\, Edney will discuss his process for crafting custom guitars near the White Mountain National Forest. Discover how he harvests and utilizes local\, indigenous tree species to create instruments that are not only acoustically resonant but visually stunning—embodying the timeless\, shared principle of making the useful things around us beautiful. \nParticipants will learn fundamental bracing techniques. Alex will demonstrate on a dreadnougt-style guitar face. The dreadnought is a large-bodied acoustic guitar know for rich tone and powerful projections. \nPresenter Biography \nLuthier Alex Edney has been captivated by the artistic and physical principles of guitar acoustics for most of his life. This passion for luthiery began during his teenage years while performing basic instrument repairs at a neighborhood music shop. After graduating high school\, Edney built his inaugural flattop guitar under the mentorship provided by the Vermont Instruments School of Luthiery. \nIn 2007\, he earned formal credentials in instrument repair as a graduate of Atlanta Guitar Works. Following a career based in the greater Boston region that lasted until 2021\, Edney moved his base of operations to a historic sawmill site located in western Maine. Currently\, he practices his craft as a local luthier near the White Mountain National Forest\, where he draws creative inspiration and harvests materials directly from the indigenous tree species that form the foundation of his handcrafted instruments. \n  \nREGISTER NOW

She took her first pottery class in May 2025 and hasn’t looked back since. She thrives on the creative freedom ceramics provides and loves sharing her passion for the medium with others. \nWhen she isn’t at the wheel\, Renee enjoys spending time with her seven grandchildren and exploring the world with her husband. Ms. Lowry will share insights into this newest endeavor\, which she anticipates will be her final published work. \nAttendees are invited to join us for a presentation that blends personal history with literary mastery\, including a presentation of images and stories from her life’s work. \nAbout the Presenter \nLois Lowry is an acclaimed American writer known for her versatility and her ability to tackle challenging subject matter for children and young adults. Born in Honolulu\, Hawaii\, in 1937\, her early life was shaped by a childhood spent in the islands and later in Tokyo. Over half a century\, she has authored more than 50 books\, earning two Newbery Medals and a permanent place in the hearts of readers and educators worldwide. DESCRIPTION:A Night at the Museum welcomes you to step back into the 19th century and explore the iconic painted walls of Rufus Porter and Jonathan D. Poor by firelight.\n\nBeginning with a talk by our curator\, Jessie Burchett\, we will delve into the history of light\, tracing a timeline of invention from candles to oil lamps and gas lighting to the electric light. As the sun sets\, we will invite you to walk through our muraled rooms with only candles and oil lamps lighting the way\, experiencing these spaces as they would have been when the murals were freshly painted.\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\nJessie recently completed her Master’s degree in Museum Studies and has since joined us at the Museum as our Curator\, bringing with her a love for hunting down new evidence to better understand our shared past. After visiting Maine for a number of years\, the surrounding nature and sense of community convinced Jessie and her husband to purchase a c.1800 farmhouse in Waterford in 2024. When she isn’t fixing up her house or fallen down a research rabbit hole\, she can be found swimming in the lake\, traversing antique stores\, or hiding away with a good book.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? When renovating a home in Lovell\, Maine\, Price uncovered a collection of rare silent movie posters hidden within the walls. This talk weaves together the mystery of how these artifacts were preserved\, the challenges of the renovation\, and the remarkable stories of the people and history unearthed along the way. Come hear the full tale of this unique architectural time capsule. \nPresenter Biography \nPrice Hutchins and his late wife\, Ann\, moved to Maine from Hopkinton\, Massachusetts\, where they owned and operated a 300-seat restaurant. Following a move from Bridgton to Lovell to support their son Eli’s education at Fryeburg Academy\, the couple purchased a historic 1805 property on Main Street in 2001. While Price initially viewed the aging structure as a candidate for demolition\, Ann’s vision inspired a long-term\, ongoing restoration project. It was through this meticulous labor of love that Price eventually uncovered the remarkable collection of silent movie posters that serve as the centerpiece of his presentation today. \nREGISTER NOW

DESCRIPTION:In this class\, we are stepping away from standard canvases and synthetic materials to collaborate with nature. We will be transforming raw\, dried and drilled gourds into beautifully decorated\, fully functional birdhouses. We hope you join us. \nWorking with gourds is a unique artistic experience because no two are exactly alike. Nature has already done the sculpting for you; your job today is to look at the unique shape\, curves\, and texture of your gourd and decide how to bring its personality to life. \nFee:  $20 for members of the Rufus Porter Museum; $25 for non-members. Supplies and light snacks will be provided \nPresenter Biography \nDebi has been a cherished member of the Rufus Porter Museum community for three years\, bringing an incredible depth of knowledge\, passion\, and creativity to everything she does. A true lover of history and community\, she currently resides just down the road in Waterford Flat\, in a beautiful historic home built before 1806. \nWith 30 years in education\, Debi’s background uniquely blends art and science. Now retired and living in Saco with his wife\, Tracie\, Mike continues to share his love for local stories as a part-time writer for Bridgton Living magazine. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear firsthand accounts from a legendary voice in Maine sports journalism. \nPresenter Biography \nMike Lowe spent 40 years as a sportswriter for the Portland Press Herald (1982–2022). His broad career spanned local high school sports\, UMaine’s first NCAA hockey title\, the 2008 Beijing Olympics\, and 20 years covering the New England Patriots across seven Super Bowls. Beyond the scoreboard\, Mike tackled critical issues like athlete mental health\, youth sports costs\, and inspiring community features.
